iPhone 5 Launching in Second Week of September? iPad 3 Later?

The China Times pinpoints the iPhone 5 release to the second week of September with an initial order of 4 million units. Suppliers are said to be currently preparing 400,000 trial run units. The news report also reports that the next iPad may be delayed until Thanksgiving due to component shortages.

A mid September launch lines up nicely with current expectations for the iPhone 5 release. Apple has held an iPod media event in September for the past 3 years. With no iPhone release during this year's WWDC, Apple is expected to include the iPhone launch at this September event alongside the public release of iOS 5.

There's been some debate about what features the iPhone 5 will include. Recently leaked case designs have shown some major design changes, while other sources have said the iPhone 5 will look largely like the iPhone 4.

The China Times has had a hit or miss record with Apple-related rumors, though they do seem close to Apple's suppliers in China and may certainly have knowledge of their production plans. had previously also reported the iPhone 5 would see a September release with production beginning in July. With the release of iPhone 4, Aiseesoft Studio also releases corresponding converting software for iPhone fans. The main products are Aiseesoft DVD to iPhone 4 Converter and Aiseesoft iPhone 4 Movie Converter. Aiseesoft DVD to iPhone 4 Converter can convert DVD to iPhone 4 easily and fast. Apple – the World’s Biggest Smartphone Seller

According to the Financial Times, Apple has replaced Nokia to become the world’s top smartphone vendor.

Shipments of Nokia smartphones declined by 34 per cent to 16.7m units, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by Apple in its second quarter.

Actually, Apple has already become the biggest smartphone maker by revenue and profits, but the April-June period marked the first time it had surpassed Nokia in volume.

Nokia has led the market in smartphone shipments since 1996. But since the announcement of iPhone in 2007, its market share came under attack.

Besides of Apple iPhone, Nokia is also faced with smart phones built on Google’s Android platform by the likes of Samsung and HTC.

Stephen Elop, the CEO of Nokia, said: “The challenges we are facing during our strategic transformation manifested in a greater than expected way in the second quarter of 2011.”

Of course, Apple also has faced stiff competition from Android over the last couple of years, but with dozens of manufacturers pushing out Android devices, no single vendor has been able to approach Apple’s shipment volumes. Samsung and HTC lead the Android pack and have experienced very strong growth, but each company’s smartphone shipments remains about half that of Apple’s.

At the tail end of the 1990s dot-com boom, Douglas Edwards took a gamble: He left his marketing job at an old-media company, taking a $25,000 salary cut to start work at a small, little-known Internet concern in its second year of operation. That his new employer was losing money and burning through venture capital went without saying. But unlike the footloose 20-somethings who usually populated Silicon Valley start-ups, Mr. Edwards had little margin to bet wrong; he was 41, with a mortgage, three children and a worried wife. He hoped he could get his old job back if the company ran out of money.

Early adopters of the company's product shared his uncertainty about its future. Unable to understand how the business could keep going without any income, some users offered donations, which were politely declined.

Things worked out all right, though: Mr. Edwards was employee No. 59 of Google. "I'm Feeling Lucky"—the title comes from a rarely used button on the Google home page—is his memoir of five years inside perhaps the most unusual and ambitious company in America.

Let's get the bad news out of the way first. "I'm Feeling Lucky" does not share the scope, depth, and rich detail of recent journalistic accounts of Google, such as Ken Auletta's "Googled" and Steven Levy's "In the Plex." It is a chronicle of the day-to-day experiences, sometimes mundane, of a figure who was not a major player within the company.

Still, Mr. Edwards succeeds in recreating a lost era of the online industry. When he started at Google in 1999 as the director of consumer marketing and brand management, portals—meaning websites offering news and links on various subjects—were all the rage. Web searching was a commodity service; one search engine (AltaVista) was about as good as another (HotBot). Google couldn't get its hometown newspapers, the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Chronicle, to return its phone calls. Wall Street, too, was more interested in portals than in boring search engines.

Mr. Edwards came to his job as a subscriber to the conventional wisdom. In an early presentation to cofounder Larry Page and others, Mr. Edwards unwisely declared that only marketing, not technology, could set Google apart. "In a world where all search engines are equal," he asserted, "we'll need to rely on branding to differentiate us from our competitors."

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 416 pages, $27

The world would soon become acutely aware of the quality of Google's search algorithms. And Mr. Edwards was learning that he had come to work at an unconventional enterprise, even by Silicon Valley standards. He was a marketer in a company where marketers seemed to wield only slightly more influence than the cleaning crew. Mr. Page and cofounder Sergey Brin were happy to let competitors shovel millions of dollars into promotion. "Never, ever, ever delay the launch of a product just for a marketing issue," Mr. Edwards was warned.

Also embedded in Google's mindset was a belief in hiring only the best engineers. Of course, every company claims to seek the strongest talent. What impressed Mr. Edwards were the extremes to which Google took this policy, particularly during a boom time when it seemed like companies were hiring any techie with a pulse. The first Google systems administrator Mr. Edwards encountered was a self-taught networking whiz with a Yale medical degree—a reflection of the weight that the Messrs. Brin and Page gave to elite academic credentials, even if not in computer science. Google demanded to see job candidates' high-school SAT scores, Mr. Edwards says, confident that the numbers revealed intelligence, not just "scholastic aptitude."

When the company put a recruiting message—"You're brilliant. We're hiring."—and link on its otherwise sparse home page, Mr. Edwards complained that only a microscopic percentage of visitors to the home page would be qualified to work for Google. No matter: The company was "willing to waste a few hundred million impressions to reach the dozen or so people they might consider."

Mr. Edwards also saw in Google a focus on customer satisfaction that was no less uncompromising. True, the company was sometimes surprised by users' privacy concerns—as in the short-lived controversy over targeted ads in Gmail, ads that were based on an analysis of content in the user's e-mails. In general, however, Mr. Edwards found that Google was eager to meet users' needs. When engineers proposed a plan for pricing online ads based on the number of click-throughs, not on the number of times the ad was shown, Mr. Page was unswayed until the team convinced him that the system would improve the user experience by making the ads they saw more relevant to their interests. Mr. Edwards wrote a list of epigrams for his bosses summarizing the Google philosophy. At the top: "Focus on the user and all else will follow."

Although Mr. Edwards lost his job in early 2005 during a reorganization, "I'm Feeling Lucky" shows no signs that he harbors much bitterness. The book does not reveal any scandals, unless one counts some sexual shenanigans in the nap room. It's hard to be a disgruntled former employee when you walked away with a portfolio of Google stock and stock options that have a 20-cent strike price and GOOG is trading at over $500.

His apparent lack of spite is a strength of the book. A weakness is the difficulty he obviously has in sorting the significant from minutiae, with the result that he devotes too much attention to ephemeral bureaucratic tiffs. Luckily for users of Google's search engine, the company's algorithms are better at sorting wheat from chaff.

Apple Might Present the iPad HD This Fall

According to This is my next, Apple is probably launch the third-general tablet. Surprisingly, the 3th-gen iPad would be called iPad HD instead of the iPad 3.

The new iPad HD will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution – twice the current 1024 x 768 resolution, and it will target professional users in the video or photo industries. The iPad HD will be sold alongside the existing iPad 2. Just like the difference between MacBook and MacBook Pro, the iPad HD is merely a “pro” version of the iPad 2.

As for the next iPhone (iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S), according to the Wall Street Journal report, the new device will be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4. And the new iPhone will be utilizing Qualcomm chips in place of Infineon parts.

The report says that orders are being placed with suppliers in China, meaning that production lines will likely start rolling soon. And it is expected to launch sometime in the fall.
